A 6 inch flat mill file for taking material off flat surfaces: squaring the end of a bar, breaking the edge on a cut, dressing a weld before finishing or cleaning up a burr. The blade carries cut teeth along both flat faces and removes material on the push stroke, so a few passes are usually enough to true an edge or bring a surface back to flat. The 150 mm blade runs into a two-tone handle with a hang hole, which keeps the file within reach on a pegboard and gives a grip that stays secure when the blade is warm from work. Overall length is 260 mm and the blade is 16 mm wide, with the handle adding 110 mm on top of the cut length. Maintenance shops treat it as a consumable and change it once the teeth stop biting, rather than pressing a worn file into a job. A first file for an apprentice or a touch-up file for a fitter, since the flat cut trues a face without the heat a grinder puts into thin stock.
