Key points

  • 420 stainless steel blade resists rust and will not mark the finish with corrosion
  • 280 x 110 mm plate at 0.8 mm is stiff enough to pull a flat coat without riding over hollows
  • Raised handle neck keeps the knuckles clear of the wall
  • Two-tone grip gives a visible, comfortable hold for long runs
  • Suits plastering, rendering, and patching and levelling work
  • A second trowel for the van, so a mix is not held up while the other is cleaned off
  • The blade edge can be filed square again after wear, so a trowel is kept rather than replaced

Product detail

Flat plastering trowel for laying on and smoothing plaster, render and mortar. The blade is 420 stainless steel, 280 mm long and 110 mm wide at 0.8 mm thick, which keeps the plate stiff enough to pull a flat coat across a wall without the edge riding over hollows. Stainless steel resists the corrosion that carbon steel trowels suffer when they are used with wet mortar, so the face stays smooth and does not rust-mark the finish. The handle is a two-tone blue and orange grip mounted on a raised neck, which holds the knuckles clear of the wall as the trowel is drawn up the surface. Suited to plasterers, renderers and bricklayers, and to anyone patching and levelling walls or floors. A bricklayer pointing a garden wall uses the trowel to spread a thin mortar bed along the joints before tooling them. Bought in pairs by plasterers who keep one trowel broken in for finishing and a second for backing coats on the same job. On a refurbishment where old render is patched in stages, the stainless face wipes clean between mixes, so a light patch is not dragged dark by the coat laid before it. Supplied as a single trowel rather than a cased set, it also suits a merchant whose plastering customers buy tools one at a time as a plate wears thin.
