Key points

  • 16 mm tip drops into a mortar joint and still clears spoil as it cuts
  • 8 mm body takes a mallet blow straight down the shank without whipping
  • Bent neck keeps knuckles off the masonry on a full swing
  • Ground back to 145 mm from a 150 mm start, so there is plenty of life left in the tip
  • The flat blade can be turned to clear a joint sideways as well as driven straight

Product detail

A flat masonry chisel for cutting brick, block, concrete and stone, and for chasing out mortar where a grinder cannot reach. The body starts at 150 mm overall and measures 145 mm once the cutting edge has been ground back, and it is 8 mm through the thickest part, so it takes a mallet blow straight down the shank without whipping. The cutting tip is 16 mm wide, which is narrow enough to drop into a mortar joint and wide enough to clear spoil as it goes rather than jamming. A bent neck lifts the body away from the wall, so knuckles stay off the masonry when the chisel is driven home. The shank carries a green painted finish and weighs 0.11 kg, light enough to be carried all day but heavy enough to take a proper swing. Suits general building work, tile lifting and light demolition. Bricklayers usually carry the chisel in the tool bag for cutting out a damaged brick, where a grinder would throw dust across the rest of the wall. A chisel for trimming brick and clearing mortar on a repair job, where the flat blade turns to clean a joint side-on.
